Matt McSherry Joins Tompkins Cortland Community College Board of Trustees

July 13, 2012

Matt McSherry of Cortland has joined the Tompkins Cortland Community College Board of Trustees. McSherry was appointed by the Cortland County Legislature to a term that expires June 30, 2019. His first board meeting is July 19. He replaces Kay Breed, who had served on the board since 2005.

McSherry is a partner in the Cortland-area accounting firm Port, Kashdin & McSherry and has been a certified public accountant (CPA) since 1986. A graduate of SUNY Albany, he is a member of the board of directors of the Cortland County Business Development Corporation and the Dryden Mutual Insurance Company. He is also active with various professional accounting organizations and is a past board member of several local organizations, including the Cortland Rotary Club, Cortland Salvation Army, St. Mary's School, Catholic Charities of Cortland County, and the Cortland Memorial Foundation.

In addition to his other community work, McSherry has a longstanding relationship with the College. "I have had the opportunity to speak to the accounting club, and am always impressed with how engaged the students and staff as in learning my profession," he said. He also previously served as a member of the Foundation Board of Directors, an experience that makes him excited about joining the College's Board of Trustees. "I enjoyed my time on the Foundation Board," said McSherry, who served on the Foundation Board from 2001 to 2007 and held the title of secretary/treasurer from 2004 to 2007. His tenure coincided with a time of significant growth in the educational opportunities at the College, as he was part of the organization that expanded the on-campus residence life offerings and secured a permanent home in Ithaca for the College's extension center with the acquisition of Tioga Place on the Ithaca Commons. "Becoming a trustee is another opportunity to be part of an institution that continues to have a positive impact in our community."

The Tompkins Cortland Community College Board of Trustees consists of 10 members, including a student trustee elected by the student body. The rest of the board consists of four trustees appointed by the governor, two each from Tompkins and Cortland Counties; two trustees appointed by the Cortland County Legislature; and three trustees appointed by the Tompkins County Legislature.
