Dr. Kirk Young serves as the Vice President of Student Affairs at Jamestown Community College where he has worked since 2014. Prior to joining JCC, Kirk worked for eight years at Utah Valley University, a large regional university in Utah. Throughout his years working in higher education, he has worked in enrollment management, fundraising, community relations, marketing, strategic planning, and several other related areas. Additionally, Kirk served for several years as the director of the Center for the Advancement of Leadership at UVU. 

Kirk holds a BA in psychology, an MS in sociology, and a Ph.D. in leadership studies from Gonzaga University. His master’s studies focused on the social impacts of large-scale mega events, particularly the 2002 Winter Olympics. His doctoral studies focused on the 360-degree feedback process as a leadership and organizational development tool. His other areas of expertise include transformational leadership, appreciative inquiry, servant-leadership, leadership and innovation/creativity, and strengths-based leadership. Kirk holds certifications from several organizational and leadership development firms, including certification as a strengths coach with the Gallup organization.

Kirk currently serves as a board member for several non-profit organizations including the Infinity Center for the Visual and Performing Arts in Jamestown, NY; the Suicide Prevention Alliance of Chautauqua County; the Jamestown Rotary Club; and the Creative Education Foundation. 

Kirk began his higher education experience at a community college as a first generation college student. The support and encouragement he received at that time was what drew him to a career in the field of higher education. Kirk’s first professional position was as an outreach counselor for the GEAR UP program. Providing services and support for underserved student populations has been a particular focus for him ever since. 

Kirk has served as a fellow for the SUNY SAIL (Strategic, Academic, and Innovative Leadership) Institute for several years. In this capacity, he has been a resource for leadership development and strategic planning for several institutions throughout the SUNY system. Additionally, Kirk is certified as a Student Success Coach through the SUNY Coaching Academy. The Coaching Academy is a part of the NY Student Success Center and features experienced, innovative leaders from within NYS who are committed to student success. In his role as a coach, Kirk has worked with other SUNY community colleges to support their journey to developing and enhancing student success and completion initiatives. 

Kirk and his wife, Katie, currently live in Lakewood, NY with their three children, McKay, Connor, and Halle.
