TC3 to Offer Four Varsity Sports in 2026-27
Change made to align with changing student body, 43% growth in adult students over the past four years
Tompkins Cortland Community College will sponsor four varsity sports in 2026-27: men’s baseball, men’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, and women’s softball. Other programs that had been offered in 2025-26 have been put on pause and will not be offered in 2026-27; men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s soccer, women’s basketball, and women’s golf.
Coaches and student-athletes on the impacted teams have been notified of the decision, allowing affected student-athletes as much as time as possible to make an informed decision about their plans for the fall semester. The College remains committed to these students and will assist to help them find their best fit for the next year of study, whether that is remaining at TC3 to graduate or transferring to another college so they can participate in a sport that will not be offered at TC3.
The move to pause some sports comes after a review of all college programming in response to changing student demographics at the College, with a goal of better aligning with the needs of the student population. The College has seen tremendous growth in the adult (25 yrs +) population, with that population growing by over 43% over the past four years. Projections show adult students will make up the majority of the student body for the 2026-27 school year.
The sports that will continue to be offered represent sports that are supported locally and regionally, offer the largest number of opportunities for participation, and maintain alignment with Title IX compliance. In pausing the programs, the College will retain all equipment and on-campus facilities, which will allow for re-evaluation of which sports to offer should future demand warrant.
