Virtual Partnerships

When we think of global education, we tend to think of mobility – such as exchange programs or study abroad. However, as the world increasingly becomes equipped technologically for collaborative exchange in a virtual setting, educators are beginning to think of global education in a different way.

Virtual exchange and collaborative programming offers an accessible, equitable, and sustainable alternative or supplement to global education offerings.

WHAT IS VIRTUAL EXCHANGE?

This process starts when a faculty member from Tompkins Cortland and an institution outside of the United States decide to collaborate together on a project, activity, module, or other component in both of their classes to be completed by all students during a particular semester. The classes do not need to be in the same subject or level in order to collaborate, however there should be a common language between all students and faculty (commonly English).

GETTING INVOLVED

As a part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, TC3 belongs to the SUNY Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) network as well. Our experienced COIL coordinator is ready to help answer your questions about COIL and how to use it in your class.

The VINE (Virtual INternational Exchange) Program

In Spring 2021, Tompkins Cortland Community College’s Global Initiatives office launched virtual exchange training and pairing for interested TC3 faculty and any faculty from our partner institutions. This training is provided for free as part of our Internationalization at Home initiative, covering the keys to designing and integrating an accessible, equitable, and engaging virtual exchange experience in your courses with a partner. There are two kinds of programs we currently offer:

VINE Faculty Program
Offered in Spring and Fall semesters.
We welcome a cohort of 6-12 faculty members to learn in carefully designed modules in a 6-week program that is free for our partners. Beginning in week four, participants will be paired up for the remaining two weeks of the program. This is a formative workshop designed to give constructive feedback to participants in order to prepare them for their international exchange activity, expected to take place in the semester following the training.

VINE Administrator Program
Offered in Summer term.

This program is for individuals who work directly with faculty or campus departments to support, facilitate, and guide virtual exchange. This training will combine asynchronous work with a weekly synchronous session to meet and discuss the topics of the week. Participants can be from any area of the institution who support virtual exchange, including but not limited to: international office staff, instructional designers, course technology support, academic/department chairs, deans, directors, and curriculum developers.
