Fostering Intrinsic Motivation

How do we foster intrinsic motivation in our students? What we can do as professors to get students thinking about assignments from less of a reward-based system and more as something that they want to do? This will be an open discussion about what you have seen in your students, what has worked, and what hasn’t.

Virginia Shank will review some research about the relationship between our policies and equity, then open a round-table discussion to the benefits and drawbacks of the policies we include, with an opportunity to share alternatives and outcomes. Come for the cookies; stay for the conversation.

Pandemic Era Learning Loss

Research has shown that disruptions to education caused by the pandemic had a significant impact on students worldwide. Testing shows that students scored lower on core math and language arts testing; our experience illuminated what that meant on a human level, and we saw a further deterioration of the “student know how” that often determines success in higher ed. We will discuss what the research shows, our experiences addressing the issue last year, and what might be changing (for the better!) this year.
